2018 in review: On immigration issues, Albany and Rensselaer county sheriffs diverge

If you're an undocumented immigrant who sets foot inside a Capital Region county jail, your fate could be decided by the Hudson River.

If you're arrested and go to Rensselaer County jail, you will be screened to find out whether you're wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). If you are, the county will call ICE, which will detain you and start deportation proceedings.

If you get sent to Albany County jail, instead of a call to ICE, you'll get free legal help while your immigration case is being decided.
