Immigration lawyers went back to court this month to block the latest attempt by the Trump administration to restrict immigration to the U.S. This time, however, instead of invoking new measures against migrants fleeing persecution, the White House and Department of Homeland Security went back in time, relying on a measure first signed into law by President Clinton
Specifically, the Trump White House moved to expand expedited removal of non-citizens — the deportation without a hearing of anyone who cannot prove they have been in the country for at least two years.
Meanwhile, some 20 Democratic hopefuls are working to position themselves as the left’s best choice in 2020. But those Democrats must face an uncomfortable truth: Much of the immigration crisis they so easily denounce in sound bites is a failure of their own party’s leaders.
